EDIT: This recipe has been updated because I found the baking soda too abrasive to the enamel after all!
Homemade face masks? Okay. Homemade hair masks and lip balm? Also okay. But homemade toothpaste? Isn't that going a bit too far?
No. Quite the contrary.
Isn't it funny how we buy organic foods and shop for non-toxic, silicon-free shampoo, but then think nothing of whipping out a blue, sparkly toothpaste to put into our mouths? Most store-bought toothpastes contain glycerin, which has actually been shown to weaken tooth enamel over the long-term because it layers the teeth with a film that prevents the minerals in your saliva from interacting with your tooth enamel.
By making your own – remineralizing and alkalizing – toothpaste, you can leave out the fluoride and glycerin and instead pack your toothpaste with natural ingredients to provide your tooth enamel with all the necessary minerals.
You only need 5 affordable ingredients that are supportive of your oral health and hygiene.
NOTE: Since the clay acts like a magnet attracting positively charged heavy metals (both from your body and your utensils), you don't want a metal spoon to come into contact with the clay! Instead, use a plastic or wooden spoon.

- Coconut oil boosts the microbiome in your gut and naturally prevents candida in the mouth. It is also said to help reduce cavity-causing bacteria.
- Xylitol is a natural sugar made from birch extract that is used in many dental hygiene products for its abilities to reduce cavity-causing bacteria in the mouth, repair damaged enamel, prevent caries, and even potentially reverse tooth decay! Yes, sugar that is actually GOOD for your teeth! (Just don't add too much since it's a sweetener, and too much can reprogram your taste buds to crave too much sweetness, which isn't what we want after brushing our teeth.)
- Turmeric powder is antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-septic and anti-cancer. It is also said to be a powerful natural teeth whitener, which I can confirm from experience. Whether it's turmeric milk or turmeric porridge, I'm a big fan of this yellow powder.
- Bentonite clay is a natural polisher, rich in minerals and alkaline. It also has the property to pull out bacteria and draw out toxins which improves oral health, combats bad breath and brightens your teeth.
Baking soda has a pH of 9 to 11 (alkaline), so it helps to neutralize the acids that constantly attack our teeth while not being too abrasive to the enamel. It also helps to remove stains.- Tea tree oil is naturally antibacterial and gives a fresh taste.
- Siliceous earth is a purified form of "silica", including both diatomaceous earth (diatomite) and radiolarian earth (radiolarite), and refers to a natural mineral product composed of fossils and other elements. By solidifying the enamel, silica prevents tooth decay and preserves healthy teeth. Silica also prevents bleeding gums, gum atrophy, and recession that trigger loss of teeth.
NOTE: Since the clay acts like a magnet attracting positively charged heavy metals (both from your body and your utensils), you don't want a metal spoon to come into contact with the clay! Instead, use a plastic or wooden spoon.
DIY HEALING TURMERIC & TEA TREE TOOTHPASTE
INGREDIENTS
6 Tbsp organic coconut oil
2 Tbsp xylitol
2 - 3 tsp turmeric powder
1 Tbsp bentonite clay (can be replaced with Rhassoul clay or whiting)
15 drops tea tree oil
(optional) 2 tsp siliceous earth or diatomaceous earth
also: 1 jar*
* I re-use sterilized little jam jars
DIRECTIONS
In your sterile jar, melt the coconut oil on the stove or in the microwave (during the winter months I just let it sit on the radiator for an hour or so!).

DIRECTIONS
In your sterile jar, melt the coconut oil on the stove or in the microwave (during the winter months I just let it sit on the radiator for an hour or so!).
Grind your xylitol to a fine powder, or dissolve in the warm coconut oil.
Add in the remaining ingredients and whisk all together until thick, well combined and creamy.
Use with a clean spoon on a dry toothbrush and brush gently for a minute. Make sure to spit out into the bin, not into the sink, as the oil will clog your drain once it solidifies again.
TIPS:
- Another heads up: The turmeric in this toothpaste will stain your toothbrush (and your clothes if you spill it...).
- Instead of tea tree oil, you can use clove or cinnamon essential oil.
- Feel free to add some calcium powder to provide extra minerals and whiten your teeth.
- If you don't like the runny oily consistency, add more bentonite clay! Or just leave out the coconut oil and use the mixture as a tooth powder! It has the same healing, mineralizing effect.
